Blog Post #5: Too difficult? :(

Progress: I have finally completed the process of learning the basics of the ukulele! Yay! It is now time to start strumming. I was a bit nervous when I began to actually learn to strum because I remember that this was the stage my sister got to before giving up on the uke (I know.... she basically has no perseverance whatsoever). She made it seem so difficult, almost impossible. But lo and behold, it was so much easier than I expected. It could be due to a tutorial I watched by a young talented girl who taught me the basics of playing and the different ways to strum that I couldn't find in any other videos. But along with these good news, there are also some sad news. I came upon a song that I really want to learn by the YouTube channel U Can Uke (mentioned in my previous post). It was a song by Khalid called "Young Dumb and Broke" that was released recently and, although overplayed on the radio, sounds very nice when played on the uke. The chords seems easy to remember but the strumming pattern is a bit complicated compared to other songs, consisting of up strums, down strums, and taps. I attempted it a couple times but it wasn't easy to memorize and I messed up constantly. I tried to watch other videos, in hopes of finding another song that I really want to learn to play but no other songs were like this one. With finals coming up and plans to take the SAT soon, I'm not sure if I will have time to practice this challenging song. Putting it aside, I plan to start off with an easy song and hopefully be able to learn Khalid's song someday.
Reflection: This time around, I managed to work on my time management a lot more by spending my free time playing with the ukulele. I didn't procrastinate on the blog post and spent my time in class working on some of it and finishing the rest at home. I was also ahead of my goals since learning to strum was much easier than I anticipated! I already started beginning to practice with some songs which is actually my goal for the next quarter! Although I am pretty disappointed that I won't be able to learn that song just yet, I know that there are many other songs out there that I can enjoy too.
